Teaching Functional Handwriting to Students in the 21st Century

Expression of Interest - Saturday, Term 2/3 2012

This practical ˝ day workshop discussed the cognitive and motor theories involved in automated handwriting. It  demonstrates that many handwriting difficulties can be prevented by altering the instructional and intervention strategies used to teach handwriting. The workshop will provide an overview of strategies to assist students obtain functional handwriting required for national testing and throughout schooling. The workshop is aimed at educators and learning support teachers, assisting children with handwriting difficulties.  It is however suitable for therapy and learning support staff .

Early Years Handwriting Instruction

Expression of Interest – Term 2/3, 2012

This practical ˝ day workshop will provide an overview on varying traditional instructional strategies to teach young children with diverse developmental skills. It will emphasise a multisensory approach to teach young children functional handwriting using developmentally appropriate strategies to automate letter production. The workshop is aimed at early years educators (Kindy, Prep, Year 1) and learning support teachers.  It is however suitable for other educators, therapy and learning support staff .

Learning to Conquer the Wees & Poos

Behavioural Management of Constipation/soiling and Urinary Incontinence in Children

Expression of Interest – Term 2, 2012

This one day workshop will provide participants with a behavioural management approach to assessment/treatment of chronic constipation/ soiling, urinary incontinence and nocturnal enuresis. The workshop will also consider the psychological components of managing these conditions with complex presentations.  This workshop is suitable for occupational therapists, physiotherapists, psychologists continence advisors, child health nurses and school health nurses.

Assisting Families Navigate Family Centred Practice  (working title)

A family centred approach is an accepted underpinning of early childhood intervention services both within Australia and overseas. Although the

principles underpinning this philosophy are widely recognised ie collaborative partnerships between families and professionals; services that are sensitive and responsive to cultural, ethnic and socioeconomic differences), the implementation of these principles in practice has sometimes been a challenge for both familles and service providers. This workshop aims to provide service provides with strategies to assist themselves and their clients through this process.

Occupational Performance Coaching:

Coaching parents to enable children’s participation

Occupational Performance Coaching (OPC) is proposed as an intervention which is family- and occupation-centred, enablement-focused and research informed. OPC involves working alongside parents to achieve parents’ goals for themselves, their children and/or their families. In OPC therapists utilise performance analysis, problem-solving, occupational and disability knowledge to guide parents’ exploration of changes that facilitate goal achievement. This workshop aims to provide therapist with an understanding of how to effectively use parent coaching within their services
